Does Your iPad Keyboard Case Actually Protect Your iPad?

There is a quiet assumption that a keyboard case protects your iPad. It often doesn't — at least not the parts that matter most when gravity takes over.

Where keyboard cases usually fail

  • Open edges: many folio designs grip the iPad by a thin magnetic strip and leave two full sides and every corner exposed. A corner-first drop is exactly the impact they cannot absorb.
  • No raised lip: when the case lies flat against the screen or leaves the camera module proud of the surface, glass meets table before anything else.
  • Back cover only: a magnetic back plate protects against scratches, not drops. It can also detach mid-fall.

The keyboard half is not the protector — it is the accessory. The shell that wraps your iPad is the part doing the real work.

What to look for

  • Full-edge coverage: the iPad should sit inside a rigid shell with raised edges, not on top of a plate.
  • Corner reinforcement: drop energy concentrates at corners; look for bumpers or a thicker lip there.
  • A hinge you trust: the case-to-keyboard hinge takes repeated stress. A stiff, wide hinge ages better than a thin fabric fold.
  • Screen clearance: closed, the case should keep the keys from pressing into the display.

iPad keyboard case with protective shell

Our 360° rotating keyboard case wraps the iPad in a full back shell with raised edges, so the protection does not depend on magnets alone — and our Magic Keyboard-style case follows the same principle for Air and Pro models.
