A pet portrait carved by hand into leather — not stamped, not printed, not printed and glued. Your photo is drawn, cut and worked into Argentinian vegetable-tanned leather, then finished with a pure cowhide ring and solid copper fitting.
The craft
Leather carving is a traditional craft worked by hand — one line at a time, with a swivel knife and a set of tools that each leave a different mark. There is no undo. A cut that goes wrong cannot be filled; it can only be re-carved from a fresh piece of hide.
That is exactly why it suits a portrait. The result has depth you can feel with a fingertip, and it is made once, for one animal.
How it’s made
- 01Drawn from your photoThe portrait is composed by hand from a single clear photograph — the expression, the markings, the tilt of an ear.
- 02Traced onto the leatherThe line is transferred to the hide, then cut with a swivel knife — the first cut that will hold every detail after it.
- 03Carved and embossedLine by line, the leather is carved and worked with hand tools. The surface is lifted and shaped so the portrait sits in the leather, not on it.
- 04Dyed, burnished, finishedColour is built up in layers, edges are burnished smooth, and the piece is sealed and hand-checked before it is fitted to its ring.
Materials
- Argentinian vegetable-tanned leatherThe carving surface. Vegetable tanning is the one finish that takes and holds carved relief — it is why hand-carved leather looks sculpted rather than printed.
- Pure cowhide outer ringA solid hide ring holds the portrait’s shape and takes the wear of daily handling, so the carved face is never the part that flexes.
- Pure copperThe fitting is solid copper — it darkens and warms with age rather than flaking, and adds a quiet weight in the hand.
Personalisation
- One or two pets in a single carved composition
- Optional pet name or short inscription
- Made from a single reference photo per pet

Care
Keep the leather dry and away from prolonged direct sun. Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth; condition sparingly with a neutral leather balm if it begins to feel dry. Copper will darken naturally with handling — that is the finish ageing, not a fault.
Because every piece is carved from your own photo, final detail and placement vary naturally from piece to piece.
