iPad Trackpad Not Responding? Causes, Fixes, and What to Look for in a Case

A frozen cursor mid-email is the most annoying three seconds in iPad ownership. Before you blame the case, run the cheap fixes — then look for the tell-tale signs that the hardware is the problem.

Quick fixes (software first)

1. Reconnect Bluetooth. Forget the accessory in Settings → Bluetooth and pair again. Fixes most one-off freezes.
2. Charge it. Some keyboards degrade trackpad polling on low battery long before the keys give up.
3. Update iPadOS. Trackpad behaviour ships in system updates; a stale OS is a common culprit.
4. Restart the iPad. Boring, effective, underrated.

When the case itself is the problem

• Cursor jitters only in one position: the hinge or pogo-pin connection is flexing. Cases with weak hinges drop the connection when the screen tilts past a certain angle.
• Wakes late from sleep: cheaper boards take seconds to renegotiate the connection; a good trackpad responds on the first touch.
• Pressure dead zones: an inconsistent click anywhere on the pad usually means the mechanical layer is failing, not the software.

If all four software steps fail and the jitter follows the hinge, the case has earned its retirement.
