Why Do Clear Phone Cases Turn Yellow? The Science and the Fix

Your clear case looked perfect in the shop — crystal, bright, showing off the phone you paid for. A few months later it has the colour of weak tea. You didn't do anything wrong. The case is doing what its chemistry always planned.

Why clear cases yellow (the short science)

• UV light: sunlight breaks down the polymers in soft TPU, and the breakdown products are yellow-brown. Hard polycarbonate barely reacts; TPU sides yellow first — which is why the edges discolour before the back.
• Heat and oils: body heat and hand oils accelerate the same reaction, even indoors.
• Oxidation: exposure to air slowly ages the material regardless, so even a drawer-bound case will tint eventually.

So "anti-yellowing" claims are not binary — they are about how much the manufacturer slowed the reaction, not whether it exists at all.

What actually helps

1. Hard-shell backs stay clear far longer than full-TPU cases.
2. Anti-yellowing additives in the TPU buy months or years of clarity, not forever.
3. Wipe it down. A weekly clean removes the oil film that speeds oxidation.
4. Keep it out of direct sun when you can — dashboards and window sills are case kilns.
